The following excerpts are taken from various obituaries held in the Dawes County Historical Museum, Chadron, Nebraska:
Funeral services for L.W. Gorton,October 26, 1935, were held from the Trinity Methodist church in Omaha…
Lindley W. Gorton was born at Ypsilanti, Mich., November 7, 1867. He moved with his parents to Arcadia, Wisconsin, when two years old. From there he went to the Dakota Territory to live with an uncle on a farm. Later he went to Crawford [Nebraska] in 1890 to study pharmacy in the store of his brother, George E. Gorton…. Later he purchased a large drug store in Chadron.
He was married to Maude Ira at Santee Agency, Nebraska, September 27, 1894. To this union four sons and two daughters were born, Walter, Guy, Frank, Donald, Claire and Mary. Mrs. Gorton died while the family was living in Chadron.
Mr. Gorton was married to Jennie Ellis of Crawford and to this union one son, Lindley, was born who lives in Omaha.
Guy W. Gorton, 73, of Phoenix, Ariz. died January 8 [1972]. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lindley W. Gorton…. He is survived by his window, Nadine, daughters Nancy and Renee of Phoenix; son Guy, jr. of Sunnymeade, Calif. Funeral services and burial were held in Phoenix.
Memorial services for Claire G. Boyd will be Friday June 26 [1970] …. Rites will be held at Greenwood Cemetery. Rev. Wolf, the father of Mrs. Gorton J. Boyd will officiate…. She is survived by one son, Gorton Jim.
Death came Sunday, December 23 [1951] to James William (Jim) Boyd… He was born at Brazil, Ia., March 15, 1895, the son of Mr. and Mrs.John boyd….He was married to Claire Gorton at Chadron May 25, 1917….He is survived by his wife, on son, Gorton Jim, a daughter Shirley, and his mother Mrs. Eva Erickson.
Comment:
The Greenwood Cemetery records indicate that a Dorothy Gorton, aged 16 days, was buried in this same plot on Feb. 17, 1915. This name is not on the stone.
