Funeral services for Merle Johnson of Craig were held Wed., Jan. 12, 2000, at the United Methodist Church in Craig. He died January 9 at the Oakland Memorial Hospital following a brief illness at the age of 69 years. The Rev. Greg Hall officiated at the service. Sandi Landholm was organist. Casket bearers were Danny Johnson, Greg Johnson, Andy Johnson, Troy Johnson, Stan Harney and Shannon Harney. Honorary casket bearers were Orville Magill, Fred Fager, Vaden Maxwell, Rick Clabaugh, Danny Mallette Ronnie Rogers, Roger Raver, Caroll Pearson, Steve Nelson and L. Gordon Nelson. Military graveside rides were by American Legion post #127. Burial was in the Craig Cemetery. Palmquist-Pelan Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. The family suggests memorials to the United Methodist Church, Craig Fire Department and America Legion post #127. all in Craig.
Merle Gene Johnson was born July 2, 1930, in Tekamah to Harold V. and Fern E. (Wagner) Johnson. Merle grew up in rural Craig, where he attended Alder Grove and Craig Schools. After high school he started farming with his father. Merle was drafted in the U. S. Army on Jan. 4, 1952. He served during the Korean War in the tank division until his honorable discharge on Oct. 3, 1953.
On Oct. 18, 1953, he married Ann Schmidt. To this union, four children were born. He continued farming on his own until 1979, when he began his career as Burt County Road Maintenance Operator. He later continued this occupation for the Craig Township until his retirement in August 1999. Merle was a life member of the V.F.W. and active in the Craig American Legion for 42 years. He was a member of the Alder Grove and United Methodist Church in Craig for 50 years. Merle served on the Craig Fire Department for 20 years, during which he held the positions of secretary-treasurer and fire chief.
Survivors include his daughters and son-in-law; Debi Hampton, Jeri & Layne Baker, all of Oakland; sons and daughter-in-law; Ronald & Jody Johnson of Arlington, Scott Johnson of Marble Falls, TX; brothers and sisters-in-law; Roger & Rae Johnson, Ramon & Ursula Johnson, all of Craig; six grandchildren, Christopher, Brent & Andrea Ahrens, Jordan, Heather & Braden Johnson; four step- grandchildren; Clint, Chad, Kent & Ross Baker. He was preceded in death by his parents.
