Harry James Becker was born September 2, 1867, in Greenville, Mercer, PA. His father was John Henry Becker born in 1843 in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. His mother was Margaret Maurer born about 1848 in Pittsburgh,PA. He was a baker and opened one of the first ice cream stores in Iowa and Nebraska. He had a baker in his home at 2026 Sewell and later had a cafe and bakery in Lincoln. He would often take baked goods to the State Capitol. He was active in both the First and Trinity Methodist Chrch in Lincoln.
On December 31, 1908, he married Julia Newberry Hotaling at the home of his sister Susan Amelia (Becker) Martin. Their first home was 1729 Ryons in Lincoln where their three children (Harry James 1909-1975, Henrietta Margaret 1911-2008, and Richard "Dick" Newberry 1914-1966) were born. They later moved to 2026 Sewell, Lincoln. He spoke fluent as well as English. Once he took his family to Wisconsin to buy a new Kissel automobile at the factory.
On January 3, 1936, he sat down in his chair. When he bent over to tie his shoes he suffered a fatal heart attack. He died at his home on Sewell.
