Confederate Vet Dies in Nebraska
Cummins Gilmer, 89, Ponca’s last “War of the Rebellion” (Civil War) veteran and perhaps the only veteran of the southern army in this section of Nebraska, died of pneumonia at his home here Christmas night.
Mr. Gilmer was born near Lebanon, VA., in 1844. When he was 18 he enlisted in Company G. 29th Virginians, Pickett’s division, under Robert E. Lee. He served in campaigns in Virginia, North Carolina & South Carolina, Kentucky, and Tennessee, and fought at Cold Harbor, Five Forks & Petersburg. The day before Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Mr. Gilmer was captured but released the following day.
Mr. Gilmer came to Nebraska 46 years ago. He is the father of six children, three daughters & three sons., Lee and Will of Ponca, and Cummins of Los Angeles, and three daughters.
