Hermann Sohne Cemetery
Wayne County,
Nebraska

The historic Hermann Sohne (Sons of Hermann) cemetery is located near where the town of Altona once stood. Altona was once quite the little town with a general store and at least two bars. Now it is two houses and a church. The small cemetery is abandoned, and a neighbor a little distance away mows it for Memorial Day, and a couple other times during the summer. Research shows that the "Order of Hermann Sons" was founded in 1840 by American citizens of German descent, for the purpose of preserving the German custom, the German spirit, and the German tradition. After WW I it fell out of favor and the cemetery was abandoned. By its size it can be assumed that there are more burials there than indicated by the 5 or 6 stones remaining. Last burial shown was in 1936.
