Edmund W. Varner
B. Feb. 25, 1880
D. June 3, 1963
Edmund Varner was a son of Lorin A. and Alma Garney Varner, and when he was two years old, in 1882, the family came to live in Sterling. The senior Mr. Varner was a lawyer, but as a result of taking over the Sterling Sun on a mortgage, he became publisher of a newspaper. Edmund learned the trade in his father's shop , and his four sons and one daughter followed in his footsteps as each entered the printing trade.
Edmund Varner and Myrtle Francis of Sterling were married in Tecumseh in March of 1903. Four years later Edmund Varner purchased the Adams Weekly Globe, which he owned until the time of his death, although his daughter, Mrs. Kenneth Martin had been publishing the paper since prior to World War II. At other times Mr. Varner also owned newspapers in Ault and Ovid, Colo.
