Entrance to *EVERGREEN CEMETERY

Evergreen/Underwood/Carpenter Cemetery
Box Butte County,
Nebraska

Comment:

The Evergreen Cemetery is located seven miles south of Alliance, Nebraska, and seven miles west in section 25, township 24 north, range 50 west of the 6th Principle Meridian.

The date on the entrance sign reads “1900,” but there are gravestones with death dates before 1900.

July 2010. Thanks to a viewer we now have this additional information:
The following information on the Evergreen Cemetery is from the book titled "Prairie Pioneers of Box Butte County" by Mae Manion.
"A sod church was built one mile north and six miles west of Letan on the northeast corner of Section 25-24-49. Baptist ministers who served this church were Rev. Joseph Westley and Rev. Boyer. A cemetery was started one mile south of the church building in the early eighties. It is called the Evergreen Cemetery or Underwood Cemetery in honor of Calvin Underwood on whose land it was located. This cemetery is well fenced and has many headstones. Many of the graves are outlined with cement or bricks. Many names of the earliest pioneers appear on these headstones...."
Jesse & Rhoda Jane (McCoin) WRIGHT. In his obit they called the cemetery the Carpenter Cemetery. I think they called it the Carpenter Cemetery because it was very close to the Carpenter Post Office which was a sod building that sat on the land owned by Dennis (?) Carpenter. You will notice that there are alot of Underwood's buried in that cemetery also. Cal Underwood's neice, Addie Belle was married to George W. Wright, the son of Jesse Wright.
