The following passage is from page 16 in Prairie Justice by George Watson.

“The first County Judge [Dawes County] was Burr Shelton, who came to O’Linn in 1884 and opened a business. Judge Shelton was appointed Justice of the Peace in April of 1885 and was elected County Judge in June of 1885. Judge Shelton served as County Judge for approximately six months. He was primarily a businessman, and in December, he erected a two-story building in downtown Chadron. A street in Chadron is named in his honor and it carries his name to this day.”
