James E. SERRES

Montrose Cemetery
Sioux County,
Nebraska

Inscription:

His head is covered with snow white hair.
He's traded his saddle for an old rocking chair.
He wakes up in the morning and wonders what for.
For he's too old to ride the range any more.

He thinks of the change since he rode the range.
and he wonders how they will ever get by. For he
has no need. He is the last of the breed and he
slowly lets out a sigh.

He sits all alone. His heart heavy as a stone
and he thinks of the years gone by. Of the horses
he has rode. Of the times he's been thrown. And the
buddies he's told good-bye.

He longs for the day when he rides away. And he gets
a tear in his eyes. For his buddies all wait at the
big pearly gate. With the boss up there in the sky.

His ponies all wait in the corral all fat and all in
their prime. He knows'em by name. They all look the
same. Old Smokey, old Joker and Dime. He rode them in
all kinds of weather and they all proved to be true.
He knows they will all stay together. Old Chaulkeye, Old
Diamond and Blue.

He knows when the last round-up is over and the heard is
all gathered as one, the big boss will say as he rides
away. We have finished. Your job is well done.
