Lyons Mirror-Sun, 21 Jan 1915: TOWN MARSHAL FINDS WIFE WITH ANOTHER; GETS GUN INTO PLAY. ALLEGED LOTHARIO STRUCK BY TWO BULLETS AND MAY DIE-OFFICER IN CUSTODY. Rosalie, Nebraska, Jan. 21. Jess Cochran, the local marshall, shot and fatally injured John Jump, Jr., as a result of jealousy. Cochran and his wife had not been living together for several months, due to the alleged attentions of Jump. Mrs. Cochran had been making her home with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Vassar, east of Rosalie. Mrs. Cochran had been spending the day with a sister, Mrs. Loren Wotten, and Jump arrived at Wotten's in the afternoon. In the meantime, word was sent to Cochran that the two were at Wotten's. Cochran arrived on the scene and found Mrs. Cochran and Jump together. Cochran walked in, and without a word, shot Jump twice. The first bullet deflected from a can of smoking tobacco. The second bullet took effect in Jump's left side, passing through the lung. Cochran then left, thinking he had killed Jump. He gave himself up. Jump was taken to an Omaha hospital and is thought to be fatally injured. (The Pender Republic 21 Jan 1915 states that three shots were fired, the first two missing, and the third struck Jump just in front of the shoulder blades, shattering the backbone and cutting the spinal cord). The Pender Republic 28 May 1915:Cochran testified that Jump made a move for his left hip pocket, and (Cochran) thinking that he (Jump) was going for a gun, fired at him three times.Jump's dying declaration was admitted into evidence. The jury returned a verdict of manslaughter, with a penalty of from one to ten years imprisonment, the minimum term being recommended.
