John Belton Mulinix was born in South Carolina or Georgia, and fought in the Civil War as a Confederate. He was taken captive, and released at the conclusion of the war. He married Cordelia Amanda Tomlinson in Springfield, Sangamon, Illinois 11 August 1867. Their first four sons were born in Illinois, and the family moved to Saline County, Nebraska before the 1880 census, where they had two sons and two daughters. They lived for many years in Daykin, Jefferson, Nebraska, and both of them died there. Cordelia Amanda Tomlinson was the daughter of Nicholas Tomlinson and his first wife, Nancy Davis, of Sangamon County, Illinois. She was living in Springfield when Abraham Lincoln was assassinated and brought home to Springfield to be buried. While living in Springfield, she was a member of the Christian Church, but joined the Methodist church when the family moved to Nebraska.

Their eight children were: John, Edward, William, Fields, Charles, Katie Beatrix, who married Fred Mumma in 1900, George, and Elizabeth "Lizzie", who married Will Houck about 1905.
