The oral history is that Dr. Harvey Link, a Civil War surgeon, gave the name “Mount Auburn” to this cemetery. It may have been named after Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which is famous as “America's first garden cemetery” (Founded in 1831). The land for the cemetery came from a Plambeck family farm.
