Weigand Cemetery
Knox County,
Nebraska

This historic cemetery is rarely seen by anyone, as it is a mile deep into rough, privately owned property NW of Crofton. The cemetery is located high on a hill overlooking the Weigand homestead and what became the settlement of Weigand. It is mowed a couple times a year and is protected by a sturdy fence. One of the original brick gateposts still remains although it has fallen over. The first known burial was in 1864 and it was unused after 1944 until a Schoenberner family member was buried in 2000. Leonhard Weigand buried his wife Therese in 1901 in an glass enclosed underground crypt so that family members could visit. As was custom trees were planted at the four corners of the plot and they stand today tall into the sky. Leonhard joined his wife in 1905. At some point the crypt was invaded by snakes and it was filled completely in with dirt. This cemetery is difficult to find unless you have directions, and permission by the landowner is mandatory.
