Rev. Robert Laing was born in Roxburghshire, Scotland, the son of William Laing and Euphemia Helen Grierson. He came to Canada in 1848 when he was 18 years of age. In 1852 he came to Council Bluffs, Iowa, where in 1856 he married Harriet Minturn. They came to Sarpy County after their marriage.

Robert was a veteran of the Civil War. He enlisted at Bellevue, Nebraska, as a Private on 16 Oct 1862 at the age of 32 years. Mustered in Co D 2nd Nebraska Cavalry on 3 Nov 1862. Received a disability discharge on 9 Apr 1863. Robert's brother, Charles, also served with the 2nd Nebraska Cavalry.

About 1875 Robert moved to Omaha where he resided until the time of his death. He was an evangelist who worked at different points throughout Nebraska.

Robert died at his home in Omaha at the age of 69 years 2 months. He was buried at the family lot in Fairview Cemetery. Rev. Edward Davis of Lincoln, who was the first Methodist minister who ever preached in Sarpy County, delivered the funeral sermon at the cemetery. Harriet died in 1916 at the age of 75 years.
