Robert Wayne Wobbenhorst died Monday, July 18, 2011, at home in Belden with his family at his side.

He was born Aug. 4, 1924, the son of John and Emma (Janssen) Wobbenhorst. He attended Cedar County rural District 40 near Belden and graduated from Belden High School in 1941.

Robert served as a signalman in the United States Navy during World War II from Dec. 14, 1943, until honorably discharged on April 17, 1946. He was aboard the USS Mary Bickerdyke, among other vessels, during his service. Robert was born, grew up on and farmed the Wobbenhorst family farm northeast of Belden all his life.

Robert married Jeannette Fox on Sept. 20, 1947, in Belden. He was a member and a former deacon of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Coleridge, Belden Volunteer Fire Department, Alderson Unit American Legion Post 149 of Belden, which he was serving as adjutant at the time of his death, and VFW Post 5283 of Hartington. Robert enjoyed spending time with family, especially his grandchildren, dancing, playing cards and bowling.

Robert is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jeannette Wobbenhorst of Belden; his three children, Janice Wobbenhorst Siwy of Belden, Judy Wobbenhorst of Tulsa, Okla., Roger Wobbenhorst and Jerrine Krajicek of Belden; two grandchildren, Traci Wobbenhorst of Gering and Travis Wobbenhorst of Gillette, Wyo.; one sister, Bonadyne Dirks of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; sister-in-law Geraldine Stephens of Siloam Springs, Ark.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law George Siwy; brothers-in-law Harold Dirks, Lyle Schultz and Ted Stephens; niece Diane Peters and nephew-in-law Frank Kittle.

Pallbearers will be Larry Schultz, David Dirks, Robert Schultz, Joe Armstrong, Richard Schultz, Gary Stutz, Jerry Schultz and Mike Peters.
