Once shook hands with President Lincoln when his unit was assign as Lincoln's bodyguard.

Moved to Dorchester in 1879 and worked for John Deere until 1916. Was postmaster for the Nebraska State Senate. Attended the 75th reuinion of the Gettysburg battle. Died at the old Soldiers and Sailors home in Grand Island.

Was the last soldier of the Civil War to be buried in Saline County. He died at the Old Soldiers and Sailors Home in Grand Island.
