News story from The Chadron Signal newspaper, January 18, 1896

“Committed Suicide

“The sad news was brought to Chadron Monday, [January 13, 1896] that Charles Berg, senior, of the Swede settlement, had committed suicide that morning

“It appears that he rose between 4 and 5 o’clock and went out. As he did not return his wife sent out Will, one of the boys, who found him hanging by a rope in the barn quite dead. He had evidently stood upon a box while fastening the rope and then kicked the box away.

“Mr. Berg was one of the best known farmers in Antelope Precinct. He was about sixty years old, strong in body and vigorous ‘in mind,’ hard working, honest and upright. He had been worrying greatly of late over his financial affairs and the only cause that can be assigned for his last act is despondency over their condition.

“Peter B. Peterson came in from the settlement and telegraphed for his son Charles Berg, Junior, was at work in the Black Hills.”

News story from The Chadron Signal newspaper, January 25, 1896

“Coroner George Uhl was down from Crawford last Friday to find out whether he was really coroner or not. George claims that no notice was sent him of Charles Berg case, but that the sheriff went out from Chadron and held the inquest without proper authority. George was very indignant over the curtailment of his rights in the case and deserved to have the people around the court house fully understand that he was elected coroner and intends to act in that capacity.”
