Arthur A. Moss, town marshal of Crawford, Nebraska, was shot and killed by John Reed, a soldier from Fort Robinson, which is located a few miles west of Crawford. The killing was the outcome of a long-standing dispute between the two that had its origin during a July 4th, 1905, horse race in which the men were riders of the two leading horses.
A much fuller account of the events surrounding this event can be found on pages 104 – 108 in Wild Towns of Nebraska, by Wayne C. Lee.
