Indeed, on the night of February 3, 1943, Nazi U-boats (submarines) torpedoed and sank the USS Dorchester not far from Narsarssuaq. (3) Of her 904 troops, 299 survived the blast and the -1.7 degree Celsius water temperature to be rescued by the US Coast Guard. What was the United States Army doing in Greenland during World War II? Surprisingly few people today realize that Greenland was a small but significant theater of war between 1940 and 1945. Pvt Randall Hightree was one of those Lost!
